Car theft is a big problem in Kenya. Thousands of cars are stolen every year, and many of them are never recovered. If you’re a victim of car theft, you might not only lose your car but also car parts like headlights, tail lights, catalytic converters, etc. In extreme instances such as carjackings, you might lose your belongings and even your life.

Car thieves are constantly devising new ways of breaking into your car and taking off with it, despite having security features such as car alarms and GPS tracking devices in place. The best thing to do is to take some simple security measures while parking your car in the streets or at home.

Here are a few measures you should take to avoid being a car theft victim in Kenya:

1. Always lock your car

If you want to avoid being a car theft victim, you should always lock your car, even if you are just stepping away for a minute. Always remember to roll up the windows, lock the doors, and take the keys with you when you get out. If you don’t, you will be making it easier for thieves—even those who had no intention to steal your car. They will always jump on an opportunity to steal your car if you make it easy for them.

2. Install more than one security devices

There are different security devices that you can install in your car like steering locks, alarm systems, GPS trackers, kill switches, etc. You should not rely on only one method to keep car thieves at bay, have at least two or more in place.

This strategy can be effective in deterring thieves because when they realise your car has several of those devices, they know they will have to overcome several obstacles first. This will probably discourage them from stealing your car.

3. Park in a well-lit, busy area

Car thieves hate hanging around public areas when they go about their activities. They mostly operate in poorly-lit backstreet areas where there are very few people.

To avoid being a victim of car theft, never park your car in these areas. Look for a well-lit public space, such as a parking space along a busy road. Car thieves will always have a second thought before breaking into your car if they know they are being watched and someone might sound an alarm. Therefore, parking your car in these areas reduces the chances of your car being stolen.

Conclusion

Losing a car to thieves can be the worst nightmare for any car owner. To avoid being a car theft victim, you are better off putting in place the security measures above. Don’t wait until it is too late.
