Safaricom has announced that they have reviewed their prices for services that they offer due to the Finance Act 2018 which added a number of provisions.

The new pricing structure will affect voice calls, SMS and data. The new and old rates are as below.

Item Current Price (Kshs) New Price (Kshs)
Voice (Peak Time) 4.0 4.3
Voice (Off Peak) 2.0 2.2
SMS 1.0 1.3
Data 4.0 4.3

The Finance Act 2018 increased Excise Duty tax on Calls, SMS and Internet from 10% to 15%. Additionally, a 15% Excise Duty tax on internet services was introduced.

As a result of the taxes, the price for calls and mobile Internet  will increase by 30 cents and SMS by 10 cents effective today.

The firm also reviewed its prices for mobile data bundles, Fibre-To-The-Building (FTTB) and Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) to effect the new 15% Excise Duty tax on internet services. The telco hopes that these changes will not affect the remarkable gains Kenya has made in mobile phone and internet penetration over the last two decades.

In July 2018, Safaricom increased M-Pesa charges citing an increase in taxes brought about the Finance Bill 2018. The proposed 15% tax was later dropped to 12% when the bill was passed.
