There are many image formats today than there were in the early days of the internet. The most common formats that were used then were BMB and GIF (Graphics Interface Format). GIF is still widely used today for animated images. JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) and PNG (Portable Network Graphics) are also common. However, a new image format called WEBP is set to become the favourite in the future.
The problem with WEBP images is that few image editing software support it, so the only way out is to convert them first. This guide provides an easy way to convert WEBP images to either JPEG or PNG.
What is WEBP?
WEBP is an image file format that Google started in 2010. It combines both lossy and lossless image compression technologies to retain image qualities. This means that you can reduce the size of a WEBP image without sacrificing the quality.
WEBP was specifically created for web images. It allows faster website loading and a better user experience (UX) since the images are smaller but retain the qualities. You can use more images on your website without worrying about the space, loading time, and bandwidth.
However, WEBP is a new image format and very few image editors support it. You may sometimes want to download an image you found online, but you can’t use it because it is a WEBP image. You will first have to convert it into any of the supported formats, such as JPEG or PNG.
You can take a screenshot of a WEBP image and save it, but that will affect the image quality. Using an online image converter is another option. The only problem with them is that it will take some time and effort to upload and download images. The best bet is to install a Chrome extension called “Save Image as Type”. It will allow you to save WEBP images as JPEG or PNG without breaking a sweat.
Follow the following steps to install the “Save Image as Type” extension for the Google Chrome browser and use it to save WEBP images as PNG or JPEG:
- Follow this link to install the “Save Image as Type” Chrome extension
- After installing, right-click on the image you would like to download
- Select “Save Image as Type” on the right-click menu
- Select your preferred format (JPEG or PNG)
- Save the image
That’s it. You can now open and edit the image using any software that supports it.
