There’s a little more to creating a PayPal account than just entering your email address and name. The following is a guide on how to create an account;

Types of PayPal Accounts

There are two types of PayPal accounts: business and personal. Both have certain benefits and ideal uses.

A personal PayPal account allows you to send money to friends and do online shopping. It’s easy to set up and is used by many people.

A PayPal business account as the name suggests is for business. It’s an ideal account if you want to sell products. It accepts debit cards at a small fee. Up to 200 employees can access this account. It offers various other benefits too.

Create an Account

We will focus on creating a personal PayPal account but the process is nonetheless the same.

  1. Visit PayPal’s Website or app and hit the ‘Sign-Up’ button at the top right corner.
  2. Choose the account type that you are interested in. It can either be personal or business. Business accounts have two different options. The standard account is free but clients must route through PayPal in order to check out. Pro accounts cost $30 per month. This gives you entire control over how you want to come up with the checkout process.
  3. Continue and add in your name, email, address and password.
  4. Add in your address and any other information that is required.
  5. Even though this is optional, click the blue ‘Get started’ button. Add in your credit card information and click add information. You can decide to add this information now or some other time.
  6. Enter your bank account information. This is also another optional step that you can decide to skip and add later.
  7. Lastly, verify your email address by clicking the link in email that is sent to you.

Your PayPal account is now ready to be used. All a person needs to send you money is your email address. You will be notified via email on any payment received. To avoid your account being limited, link your debit or credit cards to the account or the bank.

Once you have  created an account, you can link it to your M-pesa if you are based in Kenya to be able to send and receive money via M-pesa and paypal.
