You can easily delete your Facebook account if you are fed up with it or you feel that it has access to too much of your personal information. This guide will show you how to permanently delete your Facebook account and how to deactivate it temporarily.

You might also want to delete your Facebook account because of the various privacy scandals the company has been involved in. Over the years, the social media platform has been accused of leaking its user’s personal information to third-party firms for political advertising. With these kinds of revelations, you realise third parties can access your personal information through your Facebook account, with or without your consent.

Facebook Account Deactivation Versus Permanent Deletion

Facebook allows you to either deactivate or delete your account. If your primary concern is your privacy, then you should consider deleting your Facebook account. You will no longer access your account, but other Facebook users will still view messages you sent earlier.

If you want your Facebook account to be inactive only for a while, then you can temporarily deactivate it. Deactivating your Facebook account means that you will no longer appear in searches and your profile will not be viewable. This is just like taking a break from Facebook for a while–you can still re-activate your account later.

How to Delete Your Facebook Account Permanently

  1. Sign in to your Facebook account
  2. Click on your profile image at the top-right corner to go to your account
  3. Click on “Settings & Privacy”
  4. Next, click on “Settings”
  5. Now click on “Your Facebook Information”
  6. Go to “Deactivation and Deletion” at the bottom
  7. From there, you will see two options: Deactivate Account and Delete Account
  8. Select “Delete Account” and then click on “Continue to Account Deletion” to complete the process

How to Deactivate Your Facebook Account

To deactivate your Facebook account, follow the steps above until step 7, where you will have to choose whether you want to deactivate or delete it. Choose “Deactivate Account” and then “Continue to Account Deactivation” to sum it up.

It is up to you to choose whether you would like to deactivate or permanently delete your Facebook account. Note that deleting your Facebook account will not be effective immediately, but will take several days for the process to be completed. If you log back into your account during this period, the process will be cancelled and you will still have your Facebook account.
