Freelander 2 steering column Lock failure is a common problem with  Landrover freelander 2 of between 2006 and 2016. Specifically the models that use slot keys  with proximity functionality.

When this happens the car comes on but does not crank or there is  no sound from the engine. All lights will come on on the dashboard as usual but no starting. At this point normally Non-start / no crank / steering column locked message is displayed on the instrument cluster.

If you’re getting the warning light on the dash it could be that either the software requires updating or, more likely, the lock assembly in the steering column requires replacement. As a temporary fix you could try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes or so which should reset the system.

There are three options available to resolve this problem;

  • Replacing the steering column lock with a new one from the dealer.
  • Looking for a used steering lock and replacing with the damaged one.
  • Get a steering lock emulator.

Getting a new steering lock from the dealer means towing the vehicle to the dealership, getting the part replaced and coded in order to work on the vehicle. This process if always an expensive one.

With Option 2 you will have to get the lock reprogrammed as well in order for it to work. sometimes you may find an already faulty one as a replacement which means more time wasted and possibly resources.

So if you are willing to spend and take more time in fixing this problem then above options will work for you.

The last Option is using a steering Lock column emulator. This is an electronic device that replaced non necessarily all the functions of an steering lock but makes the other parts of the vehicle respond and work normally.

This is the option that I recommend as it is  affordable and easy fix.  This emulator is plug and Start, meaning there is no programming required before it works.

There is a simple procedure on how to install it as shown in this YouTube Video
