Google Translate is a free language translation tool that enables users to translate words, phrases, and web pages in over 100 languages. One of its key features is image translation whereby users can translate text on images using their device’s camera or by uploading images that contain text. This feature is useful for translating text on signs, menus, and screenshots.
In a recent development, Google Translate has introduced the capability to translate text from images on its web version. This feature was previously available only on the mobile app. However, with this recent update, users can now translate text on images directly from their web browsers.
Google made the announcement on March 8, 2023, via a post on its support forum. The company acknowledged that it was a highly requested feature by many users, and it was finally added to the web version of Google Translate.
However, this feature has a limitation on the web version. Unlike the mobile app, users cannot use their device’s camera to translate text on images. They have to upload an image and Google Translate will then detect and translate the text on the image.
How to translate images on the web version of Google Translate
- Visit the Google Translate website on your computer or mobile device.
- Click on the “Images” tab at the top of the page.
- Select the language you want to translate from and the one you want to translate to.
- Click on “Browse your computer” to select and upload the image you want to translate.
- Google Translate will then detect the text on the image and translate it.
- Click on “Copy text” to copy the translated text to your clipboard or “Download translation” to download the image you uploaded with the translated text.
While this feature is an important addition to the web version of Google Translate, the mobile app is still superior when it comes to translating text on images. You only need to open the mobile app and tap on the camera icon at the bottom right corner and choose your translation options and focus your camera on any image or text you want to translate. You can then copy the translated text to your clipboard.
