A Review of Wiko k-kool Android Smartphone

2

Wiko, the French smartphone manufacturer, is no longer a stranger in the Kenyan market, in fact; it has claimed a considerable audience. One of the most fascinating things about this company is its creative and spectacular approach of naming phones; hence, it came as no surprise when it launched a smartphone by the name Wiko k-kool. I have been after using it for two weeks; hence, definitely in a good place to give you a heads up as well as an impartial review.

Damage: Anything from about  Kshs.7,999 at Safaricom shops. Prices my differ in other stores.

What We Think You Need to Know

Design and Display

The first thing I noticed when I first laid my eyes on K-Kool is its elegant and appealing design: the general outlook is excellent. The design is easy on the eye due to its premium outlook. I was a bit skeptical when unboxing it but I must admit that I was not disappointed. The built and metallic finish is definitely awesome. The back cover is gorgeous. A feature that really caught my eyes is the top lining that houses the camera. The inclusion of a strip of a complimentary colour around the rear camera is quite interesting. The manner in which the brand name is ingrained on the cover is also interesting. The display is average but with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels, I certainly saw this coming: could be because I am used to 720 x 1080 pixels display. Nevertheless, the price does give you an idea of what to expect. At 174 grams, I though the device is a bit heavy considering that most manufacturers are investing in technologies that will help produce light weight products. The device comes in three main colours black, orange, and silver.

Performance

Well, I would describe the Wiko k-kool as a good back-up phone, for those who need one. First time users may find it okay but someone who has used high-end devices may be disappointed like I was. The 1.3 GHz Quad Core Processor and 1GB RAM are average. The specs are not that great but the performance is average, nothing exemplary about it. K-kool can hardly multitask as it lags. The rush to make good low end smartphones is not really necessary.

Camera(s)

Not the best. The rear camera has LED flash, get-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR, among other features. The 5MP back camera is not great either. To be fair, it is a 5MP shooter; hence, its images cannot compare to those produce by an 8MP camera. The 2MP front camera takes descent selfies in good lighting but struggles in low light. The camera experience was not so exciting. Nevertheless, I can describe the photos as descent and acceptable.

Battery

I expected the battery units to be 2820MAh like that of Slide 2 but Wiko had different plans. The 2000mAh is not that bad even though someone who is used to 3000mAh units may be skeptical. I used it continuously and I enjoyed 5 hours of screen time. I was not very disappointed although I felt violated given that I was being taken back many smartphones ago.

Bottom Line

Wiko k-kool is not an overwhelmingly good phone. I must commend Wiko for the elegant design but the specs are not good enough. Someone who has been using powerful brands may not find the phone good enough. The 2000mAh battery and display are not its best features. The price is good though for a smartphone with such specs.

So Rad

  • Great display
  • Decent batterry life
  • Compact design
  • Really fair price! for such a smartphone
  • 4G capability

Makes Us Sad

  • Weak performance
  • Average performance
