Smartphones have become such an integral part of our lives, from keeping us updated on the latest news to scrolling through social media. However, it’s easy to forget how much they control us. We feel the need to be online all the time, even though we know it’s not healthy. Smartphone addiction describes the way we’ve become slaves to our devices, just like a drug addict is to drugs.

It’s time to break free from the shackles of smartphone addiction and take back control of your life. Here are some ways that can help you break the cycle and find a healthy balance;

Turn off notifications

If you want to break your smartphone addiction, one thing you can do is turn off notifications for all your social media apps. That way, your phone won’t light up and call your attention every time someone likes your photo or posts something on your wall. You can still check your phone whenever you want, but you’ll be in control of when, instead of your phone controlling you. It might also be a pleasant surprise when you find a ton of notifications waiting for you to open.

Uninstall Time-consuming Apps

Do you have certain apps on your smartphone that you like to use even though you don’t really need them? It could be a game that you’re really good at or a social media app that you like to check every few minutes. These apps can be fun but they can turn you into a smartphone addict if they make you spend too much time using them.

To break away from smartphone addiction, consider deleting such apps. It can be a hard decision to make and might make you feel like you’re missing something at first, but after a short time, you’ll probably notice that you have a lot more free time. This might not be a permanent solution for everyone, but if you’re looking for a way to cut back on your app usage, it can be a good option.

Don’t use your smartphone as an alarm

You are more likely to be a smartphone addict if the first thing you do in the morning is to turn the alarm off on your smartphone. You will probably start going through your social media and might not get enough time for your morning routine. This might be just a habit but can escalate quickly into smartphone addiction. The best thing to do is to avoid using your smartphone as an alarm clock and use a regular alarm clock instead.
