The steering rack is the heart of the steering system. When it is faced with is faced with any issue, the ability to steer your vehicle becomes hindered. The following are the symptoms of a bad steering rack and how to diagnose;
Grinding Noises
Grinding noises can be heard when turning corners at low or high speeds. This indicates contaminated or low fluids. It causes the steering rack to have issues. Additionally, you may get thuds and clunks in severe cases. Get this checked.
Power Steering Fluid Leak
Power Steering failure is mostly caused by the lack of enough or low power steering fluid. Nonetheless, the steering box is hydraulically powered, the fluids don’t just decrease unless there is a leak.
This is caused by a broken gasket, loose fitting or another mechanical issue. This should be fixed as soon as possible. Failure to do this may lead to the gearbox or steering rack to develop excess heat. Gears and other components may break and this can lead to a crash.
Car Wandering
Your car wandering on the road whether in low or high speeds is a sign that the steering rack has issues. Holding the direction as well as trying to correct it is too much work.
The wheels can be out of alignment but most probably is the steering rack. Visit your mechanic as soon as possible.
Burning Oil Smell
Burning oil smell can be caused by a number of other factors. However, a bad steering rack can be one of them. If you smell this, chances are the rack is overheating. This is caused by lack of the steering fluid. It can be a leak or blockage causing it. Visit your technician to get it checked.
Tight Steering Wheel
When your steering wheel feels tight or it’s harder to maneuver like usual then it’s time for it to be checked. This is solved by adding more power steering fluid. Moreover, minor adjustments can solve this issue too.
