Twitter have in the past few years been making changes and introducing new features to its platform. They first doubled the character limit from 140 to 280 back in 2017, which was much exciting for users. Then Twitter spaces, a live audio conversation feature that was first introduced to Twitter in November 2020. The newest feature that is currently being tested is called Twitter Notes.
Twitter Notes will allow users to share long-form text with a maximum limit of 2,500 words. This is much longer than the usual 280 characters limit that users on the social media platform are used to. According to Twitter, the move to introduce the feature is a reaction to people posting images of longer texts and directing followers to external newsletters. The two-month test involves a group of writers from the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, and Ghana.
Twitter wants to use Twitter notes to keep audiences within the platform and not be led to external sources. Readers will see a headline with an internal link, leading to a longer note. The feature will enable writers to embed multimedia such as photos and GIFs. Unlike the current 280 characters feature, authors will be able to edit published notes, which will be visible on and off Twitter.
Ever since Twitter was launched, its users have depended on the platform to share short messages, get noticed, and create conversations. Being able to do the actual writing on the platform will be satisfying for writers who are looking for a free platform with a large audience to share their work. The new feature will encourage more people to read everything on Twitter and not be led to some other websites through external links.
With Twitter notes on the horizon, it is expected to give popular bogging platforms a run for their money. The feature will have the potential of attracting a crop of new writers and audiences.
