Apple must abide by a European Union law to develop a Type-C charger for the iPhone. The company has officially decided to comply to switch over to a USB-C charging port on future iPhones to meet new European Union regulations.
Old iPhone Chargers
Old chargers will work fine but other peripherals like docks, dongles, and attachable devices like controllers will be useless. The lightning plugs on these devices cannot be removed.
Surprisingly, the switch to USB Type-C will allow some peripherals for Android devices to be compatible with the new iPhone while old iPhone-compatible accessories won’t function.
Previous Changes to Charger
A few years ago, the constant changes that Apple annoyed many of its clients mainly with the Macbook charging ports.
Apple brought back the magnetic Magsafe charger on its newest line of Macbooks. However, with the iPhone, the new Macbook chargers also come with a detachable cable. They also retain the option of charging via USB-C.
The USB Type-C Charger
The EU regulations that push Apple to the USB-C chargers will come into effect in 2024. This means that all phones that are set to be released in that period must comply with the rules.
This has put Apple into a very difficult position because they go against their own models where they have their own different chargers. The company further stated that they are not happy with the decision.
Apple feels as if they are being forced to adapt to government regulations which are against what they stand for with the new USB Type-C charger.
Pollution Due to E-waste
Apple says that over a billion people across the globe have cables with lightning connectors. Therefore, many of these cables will be a danger to the environment due to e-waste because of this new EU regulation. The switch to the USB Type-C charger will bring many changes in due time.
