Chromebooks are laptops or tablets running Chrome OS, a lightweight Linux-based operating system developed by Google. Most of them are touchscreen-enabled and convertible, enabling them to be used as either laptops or tablets. The devices are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and data residing in the cloud rather than on the device itself.

Chromebooks have evolved since their initial design when they could only run web applications using the Google Chrome browser. They can now run Android and full-fledged Linux apps. Since most of their functions are cloud-based, they are cheaper than traditional laptops, have a longer battery life, and have a more streamlined design. However, they have certain limitations and are not as powerful as normal laptops.

What Can Chromebooks Do?

Essentially, Chromebooks can perform any task that can be done in a web browser. This includes browsing the web, checking and sending email, streaming music and videos, basic photo editing, document editing, etc. They also come with built-in cameras and microphones for video conferencing.

Chromebooks are not designed for resource-intensive tasks such as video editing or gaming. However, they support Android apps, so you can access a wide range of apps and games.

Advantages of Using Chromebooks

  1. They have a simple, clean, and easy-to-use interface.
  2. They are affordable. You can get a refurbished one for as low as KSH10,000.
  3. They have a long battery life (up to 10 hours on a single charge).
  4. Very light and easily portable—an 11.6-inch Chromebook typically weighs 0.9 to 1.4 kilograms.
  5. Unlike normal laptops, Chromebooks start up quickly, so you can get to work right away.
  6. You don’t have to update the software since Google updates it automatically in the cloud
  7. Chromebooks are less prone to insecurity threats because of the use of sandboxing technology.

Disadvantages of Using Chromebooks

While Chromebooks have several advantages, they also have some disadvantages. Here are some you should know in case you are planning to buy one:

  1. They have limited storage space. Most of them come with only 32 and 64GB storage.
  2. Chromebooks are not as widely compatible with software and hardware as Windows and Mac computers, so you may have trouble using certain programs or devices.
  3. They are less powerful than other laptops, so they may not handle more intense tasks such as video editing or gaming.

Conclusion

Chromebooks are some of the best and most reliable laptops to buy. But if you plan to use it like a normal Windows or Mac machine, then you might be disappointed. Before spending your cash to buy a Chromebook, you must first know what you plan to do with it.
