What should you do if you accidentally drop your phone in water? You might have dropped it in a swimming pool, stagnant roadside water, in the shower, or a container full of water. If that has happened to you, do not panic. There is a good chance that you may get your phone back in good condition if you observe the following step-by-step guide;

1. Turn off the phone

The first thing you must do after your phone falls in water is to take it out and turn it off. The longer it is submerged, the more water penetrates, causing short circuits. If it is off already, leave it that way and do not be tempted to turn it on to see if it works.

2. Remove everything removable

With the phone off and out of the water, it’s time to remove everything removable, like the sim cards, memory card, and cover. Take out the battery also if it is removable. This will make it easier for the water to come out of the phone.

3. Dry it

Now begin the active drying process. The idea is to dry your phone by wiping out any visible water. This is to make it easier for passive drying in the next step.

Do not rush to use heat from a dryer, an oven, the sun, etc. Use a towel and an absorbent paper to dry your phone’s edges. As you do this, turn it with gentle movements to prevent the water inside from reaching other parts it hadn’t.

4. Dip your phone in rice

Putting a soaked phone in rice is one of the most effective ways of drawing moisture out. Leave it submerged in rice for about 48 hours. This is where you must be patient. Avoid turning it on before all the moisture is out.

After 48 hours, make a visual check to see if there is any moisture or water remaining. You can do this by turning the phone to see if water flows out from any opening. If so, repeat the previous two steps.

5. Turn your phone on and test

When you’re sure that your phone is completely dry, this is now the moment of truth. Turn on your phone to see if it works. Fingers crossed, press the power button, hope for the best, and prepare for the worst.

If you have accidentally dropped your phone in water and followed the above procedure correctly, then you must have your phone back working properly. If your phone cannot turn on, you still have a chance by taking it to a technician for repair.
