Your touch Screen:What you Need to know

1

In the year 2006 the screen became an important part of the mobile phone. This was mainly due to the ‘touch’ ability. This ability totally transformed the way the device was built entirely. The manufacturers started building better screens and very soon the technology gained traction and the phone screen became an integral part in mobile phone design. Today’s phone screens are made using different types of technologies and today we decipher the jargon.

Types of screen technologies;

TFT-LCD

These screens are the most common out there. The TFT stands for thin-film transistor liquid crystal display. These types of screens are considerably cheaper to produce and also vary greatly in terms of display quality. These screens are backlit and thus are thickest of the screens used on mobile phones.

AMOLED

Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode- AMOLED for short is a screen technology based on organic substances. The pixels emit light individually unlike the LCD pixels which receive light from an external source. This ability ensures that AMOLED screens have darker blacks than LCD and in addition to this they consume less juice from your battery. These advantages come with a price as they are expensive to produce. AMOLED screens generally produce images of less sharpness due to their peculiar pixel arrangement.

Super AMOLED

This is an advance version of the AMOLED screen. It has capacitive touchscreen technology built-in during the manufacturing stage. It’s brighter and consumes less power than the earlier version.
Super AMOLED Plus
This type of screen was first used by Samsung on their flagship phone the S2. Its main upgrade was the pixel arrangement. It was modified to a pattern that closely resembles the LCD producing clearer sharper images.

Super AMOLED HD

This is basically a Super AMOLED screen with a minimum of 720*1080 resolution(HD) used on the galaxy note and the S3.

Super AMOLED plus HD

As the name suggests it is a Super AMOLOED plus with a minimum 720*1080 resolution(HD). Whispers in the tech streets intimate that Samsung is developing this technology for the next flagship model.
Retina display
This is a term promoted by the marketing guys at Apple for their displays. It basically means that a display has a pixel density high enough for the human eye not to notice individual pixels at 20/20 vision.

Super LCD

This is a spectacular type of LCD that offers displaying quality rival the best AMOLED displays without compromising on the energy efficiency and superior colour of the LCD display.
We at Tech guy hope this will add to your knowledge trove. The next time you go out to buy a phone keep this in mind and you will find a device that’s right for you.
