Huawei is on a mission to woo Kenyan youths with her latest midrange handsets. The Chinese multinational has launched Y3II, Y5II, Y6II and GR5. This is seen as a strategy to penetrate all market segments. Three are part of the Y series while one is a member of the G series as their names suggest.

While the technology calendar especially that of smartphones has become quite predictable, this was totally unexpected. The launch was part of a campaign of targeting young people in Kenya.  As part of its strategy, the company will visit different local universities to interact with students and at the same time showcase the four products.

Each of the phones packs unique features and it is this aspect that will be used to meet the needs of a larger section of young people.

A major distinguishing feature is the processing power of each device. GR5 is powered by a 2.0GHz HiSilicon Kirin 650, HiSilicon Kirin 620 for Y6II, 1.3GHx MediaTek MT6582 for Y5II, and 1.0GHz MediaTek MT6735M.

Both GR5 and Y6II rock Android 6.0 Marshmallow while Y5II and Y3II operate under Android 5.1 Lollipop. The first two handsets both have 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage expandable by up to 128GB.

A major differentiating feature is the display where GR5 has 5.2-inch Full HD display, 5.5-inch HD for Y6II, 5.0-inch HD for Y5II and 4.5-inch FWVGA forY3II.

GR5 and Y6II are both powered by 3000mAh battery capacity, rock 13MP primary camera and 8MP secondary camera.

On the other hand, Y5II has a 2200mAh battery capacity, 8MP primary camera and 2MP secondary camera. Y3II has less superior specs with 2100mAh battery capacity and 5MP primary camera and 2MP secondary camera. Both have a 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage.

GR5 comes with a fingerprint scanner while Y3II has a rainbow light.

The phones are expected to trade at between Kshs. 8000 and Kshs. 25,000 respectively.
